Greek islands : Milos

 Milos in one of my favorite travel destinations in the world. Certainly my favorite place in the Greek islands. A place where nature surprises you with a variety of forms and colors. The volcanic origin Milos, and the abundance of different minerals, is the reason of this diversity.

 A travel in Milos can be relax but also adventure. Milos is the perfect travel for people who like to rest in calm beaches, but also for those who prefer to explore and find new things everyday.Milos information-accommodation

 This Greek island  offers seventy beaches of different aspect. Sandy beaches or rocky beaches of different colors. Caves and  natural arches carved by the water and the wind. The island has two aspects : The developed aspect of  Milos est, and the wild aspect of Milos west. Milos est is the part of the island where all the people live. It has villages, ports, and all the touristic structures. This part of the island is the most frequented by tourists. The most famous beaches of Milos are in this part, and almost all the roads are paved. On the other end : Milos west is totally wild. This part of the island has no villages, no paved roads, no public transport or facilities. This a very beautiful part of Milos, where the uncontaminated nature will be the only attraction. Wild mountains and pristine beaches away from the crowd.

Among the many beaches I have been in Milos : I choose the beach of Kastanas as an  idyllic place out of time. Kastanas beach is in the est side of Milos, at the end of a long and difficult dirty road. This rocky beach is a synthesis of colors. The colorfull small pebbles of the beach. The white hillside, and its turquoise waters. Another interesting aspect of this beach is the presence of undersea hot springs. The presence of hot springs or sulfuric exhalations from under the ground is usual thing In Milos, and can be observed in many areas of the island. The clearest example is Paliochori beach, where everything seems to be created by this forces of nature. The red and yellow of the hillside, the smell of sulfur, and the hot surface of the sand. The restaurant Sirocco in Paliocori beach offers greek food cooked in the natural heat of the sand. Pork or lamb with potatoes in the clay pot.

Sarakiniko beach is surely the symbol of Milos. This is a very unique place. If you wanted to visit to the north-pole:  this is the place where you can get an idea of how it looks like. Everything is lit of a blinding light. White canyons. White sculptures and caves. Making a walk here is  really like to wander among the icebergs of the north-pole in the hot weather. A curiosity of this beach is the abundance of fossils set in the rocks. Fossils of shells or echinoderms millions years old.

 Milos is also archaeological sites and museums. One of this places is the Greek christian's catacombs of Milos, first for extension in Greece. This tour is guided and takes about one hour. Close to the entry of the catacombs is settled the ancient theater. After this short visit you can extend your tour to the close fishermen village of Klima.

The fishermen village of Klima is the most picturesque village you can find in the Greek islands. It is a row of colorful houses built on a strip of land right on the sea. It is one of the most photographed place in Milos, and indeed is always busy with tourists, but also with locals playing cards in their boat recovers.

A very common moment of every vacation in Milos: is the boat tour. The island has many beaches and places of interest accessible only by boat.With a day tour it is possible to make a complete round of the island, but there are a few very famous spots in common with any tour you will purchase. These places are : Arkoudes, Sikia, Kleftiko.

 Arkoudes is one of the symbols of Milos. It is a rock with the shape of rabbit from one side, and the shape of a roaring bear from the other side. Sikia it's a sea cave in which the roof has fallen, leaving only the arch of the entry, and the open sky beyond it.

Kleftiko is a group of huge arches of white stone on the sea. This is one of place where the boat stops to let you swim in the calm and incredibly clear water, and to have lunch or a snack.

I advise everybody to take a long boat tour, or two boats with different programs. All around Milos there are small interesting islands that can be visited with one of these boat tours. One very unique is Glaronissia : a small island  made of pentagonal columns of stone. Another example of this volcanic phenomenon  is the famous Giants Causeway in Ireland.

Another surprising spot is the bay of Galazia Nera on Poliegos island. The particularity of this beach is the color of the water. A kind of blue that is difficult to explain because never seen in nature before.

But Milos is not only sea and beaches. Milos is also wild mountains inhabited by goats or wild animals. Is secluded monastery and old nice villages. Plaka or Tripiti, where to make a nice walk in the evening . What I have retold is just a small part of what you can do in your travel in Milos. Due to the very wide range of possibility, any adventurer can create his personal travel plan. I advise to make a travel of two weeks, because this island is big and it takes time just to give a quick look. Travel to Milos is easy! From the past two years there is a fast boat from the world known island of Santorini. In the high season the service is daily and the ride takes only two hours .fast boat to milos Otherwise is possible to go with the ordinary ferries from Pireo greek islands ferries, or with small airplanes from Athens.
