 The nature of Santorini: Santorini has a volcanic origin.The island of today is the result of the strongest volcanic eruption that humanity can remember, in the 16th century b.c. That day the flourishing capital Akrotiri remained buried, and the myth of Atlantis started to place its foundations. Before this terrible event Santorini was a large volcanic cone, but after the explosion the new Santorini was a totally different island. A ring of land forming a big natural arbor  that is the present caldera. The caldera of Santorini is known as one of the largest and deepest calderas on the planet. The caldera is the first attraction of Santorini.  Everyday all the island is full of tourists trying to catch the best picture of it.

 Santorini beaches: Santorini has a sufficient  number of beaches to satisfy the great number of tourists going every summer for their beach holidays. Almost all of this tourism is concentrated in the large sandy beaches of Kamari and Perissa. These two villages in the est side of the island are the most developed centers for beach Holidays, with a very high concentration of structures. Inside
the caldera the beaches are rare and not very accessible, due to the steep conformation of the coast .The only beach accessible by car is the Caldera beach. In the south coast of santorini there are two interesting beaches : the red beach and the black beach. The red beach is close to the archaeological site of Akrotiri and it is probably the most famous and crowded beach of Santorini. On the other end, the black beach ( or Mesa Pigadia beach ) is never crowded and characterized by peaceful atmosphere. Lunch  at  Mesa Pigadia  Taverna is also a moment for relax and pleasure.Mesa Pigadia tavern is a good and simple restaurant run by a good and simple family of the island. Thira: Thira is the main village of Santorini and the center of the life. It has a superb position on the caldera. Thira is also close to the main port of the island : Athinios. The choice of where to lodge is very wide. Actually the town is over packed with every  accommodation typology. Thira has also a great number of shops and restaurants, and a discrete number of cafes and discos. The town has an archaeological museum and many churches, but the main attraction is its central position on the center of the caldera. People come here to look at the view on caldera and to wander in the narrow streets, among jewelry and handcraft shops.

        Transport: During summer : Santorini is one of the most active port of the Greek islands. Everyday is possible to travel to Athens, Heraklion, or other important islands like Mykonos, Paros, or Naxos. There are also daily flights to Athens or to other important islands. On Santorini is active a public transport with buses from the main square of Thira. Otherwise it is possible to rent a car or a scooter from one of the many renters.
